Flannel vs. Plaid: Fabric, Pattern, and What to Buy
Flannel is a fabric. Plaid is a pattern. That distinction makes shopping easier: a shirt can be plaid without being flannel, flannel without being plaid, or both. When you are choosing a shirt for everyday wear, look at the fabric details, fit, and construction as well as the colors.
What is flannel?
Flannel describes a soft woven fabric, commonly made with cotton, wool, synthetic fibers, or a blend. Many flannels have a brushed surface that feels soft against the skin. The term tells you something about how the cloth feels and behaves; it does not dictate a particular color or check pattern. Weight, fiber content, and construction vary among shirts, so a product's own description and care label matter more than a generic rule.
What is plaid?
Plaid describes a design made from intersecting horizontal and vertical bands of color. You can find plaid on different fabrics, including flannel, lightweight shirting, and outerwear. A photo can show you the plaid, but it cannot reliably tell you the shirt's weight, softness, or warmth.
Can a shirt be both?
Yes. A plaid flannel combines a patterned design with flannel fabric. The words answer different questions: How does it look? and What is it made from? If you prefer a solid color, you can still choose a flannel. If you want the checked look without a heavier feel, look for a plaid shirt made from another fabric.
What the difference looks like in practice
The photos below show plaid—the visible pattern—on two current DBM flannel designs. Their listed fabric details are different: the “Blueprint” product page lists a 50% polyester and 50% cotton blend, while “Survivor 2.0” lists a polyester-blend stretch fabric. That is why the pattern alone cannot tell you the material, weight, stretch, warmth, or care requirements.
How to choose a plaid flannel shirt
- Check the material on the exact product page. Fiber blends and care instructions differ by design. Do not assume every flannel is all cotton or that every one will shrink the same way.
- Compare the size chart. Check chest, sleeve, and body length against a shirt you own. If regular sleeves run short on you, compare the tall measurements where offered. Our men's tall flannel fit guide explains the difference.
- Decide how you will layer it. A flannel worn over a graphic T-shirt needs room through the shoulders and chest. A shirt worn under a jacket should move comfortably without excess bulk.
- Choose a pattern you will wear often. A plaid with black or grey can pair easily with dark denim. A brighter color can be the focus of an otherwise simple outfit.
- Look beyond the print. Pockets, collar construction, buttons or snaps, and fabric weight all change the everyday experience. Verify those details on each product listing.
Flannel, plaid, and the right fit
A great color will not rescue an uncomfortable fit. Shoulder seams should sit near the edge of your shoulders, the chest should button without pulling, and the sleeves should reach your wrists. Leave enough room for a T-shirt if you plan to wear the flannel open. For a fuller fitting and styling checklist, read our guide to wearing a flannel shirt.

Frequently asked questions
Is every plaid shirt a flannel?
No. Plaid is the pattern, and it can appear on many fabrics. Read the material description rather than judging by color alone.
Is every flannel shirt plaid?
No. Flannel can be made in solid colors and other designs. The word flannel describes the fabric, not a required pattern.
Are flannel shirts always warm?
Warmth varies with fabric weight, fiber content, fit, and what you wear underneath. Check the individual garment before choosing it for colder weather.
