Depression and anxiety are demons. Depression is an insidious creature that latches on and won’t let go. You may think it’s loosening its grip on you, but more often than not it is just repositioning in order to drag you down deeper into despair. I have suffered from depression since my teens. I am now in my early fifties and my dark passenger now has a sidekick named Anxiety. Anxiety sits in the back seat along with my OCD. Depression always rides shotgun. My OCD has gotten worse as I have gotten older. OCD’s shadow is called Overthinking. OCD is like Peter Pan with his shadow. Where you have one you will find the other. And rarely do they separate without great effort. All of these things together bring about frequent thoughts of suicidal ideation.Living with all these demons is not easy to say the least. I take medication for depression and I participate in regular therapy sessions and I have done so for years. I wouldn’t still be here otherwise.Sometimes it’s just a little something that can help. A kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or when alone, a touchstone so to speak that keeps me from falling off the edge under the weight of these demons. The Demons Behind Me concept is one of those touchstones for me. Just as the Bible instructs us to order Satan to get behind us in times when he is trying his best to overcome us, wearing a shirt or wristband from Demons Behind Me reminds me that I am in control. They may still try to be my passengers but I am the driver in control.
